The EDP Foundation Art Collection has just been distinguished with the “A” Collection Prize awarded by Fundación Arco, an organisation dedicated to the promotion and research of contemporary art.
The announcement was made on 2 December in an event in Miami, USA.
“EDP Foundation was awarded this Prize for putting together a Portuguese art collection of enormous importance, and for the support given to the internationalisation of Portuguese art”, stated Fundación Arco, also mentioning the opening of MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology.
The EDP Foundation Art Collection started in 2000 with relevant Portuguese contemporary art going back to the 1960s, with artists such as Ana Vieira, Lourdes de Castro, Noronha da Costa, Ângelo de Sousa, Jorge Pinheiro, Jorge Martins, and others.
Recently, the Collection expanded to include works from younger artists including the ones awarded and shortlisted by the EDP Foundation New Artists Award. One of the most relevant acquisitions was made in 2015 with the art collection of Pedro Cabrita Reis. Representing over 250 artists and more than 1300 works, the EDP Foundation Art Collection is now one of the most relevant collections of Portuguese contemporary art of the last decade of the 20th and first decade of the 21st centuries.
