Joana Escoval was born in Lisbon, in 1982. She studied Painting at the Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa and at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze. She has lived in Madeira, Florence, and Berlin.
Escoval was one of the winners of the 2012 edition of Prémio BES Revelação and the recipient of scholarships attributed by the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian and the Luso-American Development Foundation, in 2013. She has participated in several artist-residencies: Eira 33, Lisboa 2007; Halfhouse, Barcelona, 2011; RU - Residency Unlimited, New York, 2013-14; Fiorucci Art Trust, Stromboli, 2015. Some of the group shows she has participated in include O sol morre cedo/ The sun will die soon, Pavilhão Branco, Lisboa, 2009; BES Revelação, Museu de Serralves, Porto, 2012 and The Sound, Museu Nogueira da Silva, Braga, also in 2012; Europe, Europe (curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Thomas Boutoux, and Gunnar Kvaran), Astrup Fearnley Museet, Oslo, 2014; Le Lynx ne connaît pas de fronteires/ The Lynx knows no boundaries (curated by Joana Neves), Foundation d’Entreprise Ricard, Paris, in 2015. Her solo shows were: Onde no mundo inteiro/ Where in the entire world, Tapada das Necessidades, Lisboa, 2010; De tempos a tempos a terra treme/ De temps en temps la terre tremble, Galeria Baginski, Lisboa, 2011; Outlaws in Language and Destiny, Parkour, Lisboa, 2013; Whirlpools, Vera Cortês Art Agency, Lisboa, 2014.
